ABOUT MÅNESKIN

Måneskin (Danish for "moonlight") is an Italian rock band that formed in Rome in 2016 and consists of vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. They are best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 for Italy with the song "Zitti e buoni".

CAREER

2015-2016: Beginnings on the street

Damiano David, Victoria De Angelis, and Thomas Raggi first met each other as students during their high school days in Rome. They put out an inquiry on Facebook on a "Musicians Wanted" advert for a drummer to complete the line-up and Ethan Torchio (from nearby Frosinone) responded and soon joined the band. In 2016, the band wanted to register for Pulse, a local music contest for emerging bands, and so had to pick a name, deciding on Måneskin. Pulse also marked the beginning of the group writing its own songs for the first time. The contest led to a performance at the Felt Music Club & School in front of 200–300 people, and they later went on to win first prize.

The band went on to perform regularly as buskers on the streets of Rome. One of their initial gigs outside the city took place in Faenza, at the 2016 Meeting of Independent Record Labels. Upon returning from a trip to Denmark, the band decided to dedicate themselves to rigorous daily rehearsal.

2017-2019: X-Factor and debut breakthrough with Il ballo della vita

In 2017, Måneskin took part in the 11th season of Italian X-Factor, finishing in second place after  Lorenzo Licitra. Their song "Chosen", which they had performed on the show, was released as a single on 24 November 2017 by Sony Music and charted at number two on the Italian FIMI Singles Chart. That December, the band released its debut EP of the same name, which primarily features covers that the band had performed during the X Factor live shows. The EP went on to be certified double platinum by FIMI.

The band released its first Italian-language single, "Morirò da re", on March 23, 2018. The single features on their debut album Il ballo della vita, which also launched the singles "Torna a casa", "Fear for Nobody", "L'altra dimensione" and "Le parole lontane". The album peaked at number one on the Italian Albums Chart, reached the Top 20 on European music charts, and received a triple platinum certification by FIMI. To promote the album, the band released the documentary film This Is Måneskin. "L'altra dimensione" reached number four on the FIMI Singles Chart and "Le parole lontane" reached number five on the chart and was certified platinum in Italy. The band sold-out over 70 dates on their first tour, taking place throughout 2018 and 2019, selling 140,000 tickets. The tour featured sold-out dates in Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

2020-present: T’eatro d’ira, Eurovision Song Contest, and global breakthrough

The band spent late-2019 until early-2020 living in London, where they rehearsed and wrote new material. In October 2020, Måneskin released its seventh single, "Vent'anni".

In March 2021, the band won the Sanremo Music Festival 2021 with the song "Zitti e buoni". A few days later, they released their second studio album, Teatro d'ira: Vol. I, which peaked at number one on the Italian albums chart, and was certified triple platinum by FIMI.

After their win at the Sanremo Music Festival, Måneskin were designated as the Italian representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where they were to perform the song "Zitti e buoni".

The band went on to win the contest, receiving a total of 524 points, giving Italy its third Eurovision win, after Gigliola Cinquetti in 1964 and Toto Cutugno in 1990. After the contest, Teatro d'ira Vol. I, "Zitti e buoni", and the band’s tracks "I Wanna Be Your Slave" and "Coraline" as well as other releases from the band entered weekly charts across Europe and beyond, including several Spotify global charts. "Zitti e buoni" and "I Wanna Be Your Slave" also entered the top ten of the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart. Their 2017 cover of "Beggin'" later debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 78 and went on to peak at number 13. It was certified platinum by the RIAA and their song "I Wanna Be Your Slave" was certified gold.

The band toured Europe throughout June and July 2021 and also performed at several European music festivals that summer. The band's tenth single "Mammamia" was released on 8 October and later that month they made their US television debut performing "Beggin'" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In November, Måneskin performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and at the MTV Europe Music Awards where they won the award for Best Rock act, as well as performing at the American Music Awards. They sold-out US concerts at the Roxy Theatre and Bowery Ballroom, and opened for the Rolling Stones at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium. On January 22, 2022, they were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, making them the first Italian act to perform on the show.
